Structural Yoga Therapy™
Mukunda’s teachings are based on his interpretation
of the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali. Structural Yoga Therapy™
focuses on adapting practices to individual needs and presenting
teachings that translate into a yogic daily lifestyle. Structural
Yoga™ instructors are trained to teach people with
a broad spectrum of needs, from those able to participate
in traditional yoga classes, to those with movement restrictions,
injuries, or health challenges, who require modifications
and a very compassionate, healing approach.
The training will include anatomy, biomechanics of movement,
breathwork, meditation and ayurvedic principles, giving
students tools to practice free of pain from a safe, intelligent
and spiritually respectful foundation.
Ayurvedic Yoga Therapy™
There are several secret sutras there that imply Ayurvedic
concepts as a means to adapt to the individual’s situations.
Krishnamacharya says that Patanjali gives guidelines for
adapting yoga to four archetypal students. Within this we
are also given guidance for how the Ayurvedic energies come
into and out of balance thus providing insights into the
need for further adaptations.
Ayurvedic guidelines developed by Mukunda show how the three
energetic components of mind/body (doshas) are balanced
by three different patterns of movement in asana. The method
he recommends in his new book incorporates specific gentle
rhythmic vinyasas that promote a release of deeply seated
prana to balance vata. Those needing to balance the quality
of pitta are given different vinyasas done in a unique manner
that focuses on stretching as a means to elevate of diminish
the heating principle of pitta. Students with imbalances
in kapha need to work with detoxification, tone, and stamina
building in a unique manner to enhance their immune system.
Thus each dosha is adjusted according to the exercises of
Classical Yoga as given Mukunda by his studies with Krishnamacharya’s
varied students. Mukunda has written four books including
Ayurvedic Yoga Therapy.
About Mukunda
Mukunda is the Director of the Yoga Therapy Center, Holyoke,
MA and author of Structural Yoga Therapy, Yoga Sutras
of Patanjali and the recently published, Ayurvedic
Yoga Therapy.
After his army service, he pursued an economics degree at
the University of California – Davis. Being a Pisces
he has two sides: for his spiritual side he needed a little
balance, so he began to teach psychic healing and yoga.
In April of 1974, he had another abrupt meeting with destiny
through Swami Muktananda who initiated him into a deeper
level of spiritual life through the Tantrik Kundalini process
of Shaktipat. The effect of this deeper connection with
Spirit was profound. “My life has never been the same”.
He moved into a new direction and received a degree in religious
studies with a thesis on Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras.
Baba Muktananda encouraged him to make Yoga his profession
and gave him the name Mukunda, an aspect of the Divine Presence
as the compassionate liberator.
Mukunda was certified to teach Muktananda’s meditation
method, as well as hatha and raja yoga. Baba authorized
him to give spiritual initiation (Dhivya diksha), give spiritual
names, and to transmit Shakti Kundalini awakening through
the formerly secret process of Shaktipat. He continues this
tradition through individual sessions as a spiritual mentor.
