DOULA SERVICES
A doula is a woman who is trained in the physiology of childbirth and the emotional and physical demands of the childbearing woman and her family. She helps expectant parents before, during and after the birth of their baby through preparation, guidance, hands-on physical support, encouragement, advocacy and companionship.
The benefits of having a trained doula during labour have been well documented over the past 30 years. Studies show that when a doula is present, labours are shorter and more comfortable, there are fewer complications with less need for technical aid and pain medication. There is a greater maternal satisfaction and mothers breastfeed their babies more successfully for longer periods. Having professional support clearly results in safer births for mothers and their babies.
Doulas do not duplicate the care offered by midwives, doctors or nurses. They do not replace the woman’s partner, family or anyone who will accompany her during her birth.We work with the maternity care team to create a positive and rewarding birth experience for the labouring woman and her family.
Our Doula Services
- A minimum of two personal home visits to get acquainted, synthesize information in order to make conscious, appropriate choices and prepare you for a unique labour.
- Continuous care throughout labour and the early postpartum period.
- A minimum of two postpartum home visits to offer practical help with breastfeeding, healing and caring for your infant and emotional support during the early postpartum weeks.
- A primary and a back-up Doula who are on call 24 hours a day.
